At the end of this packet is a signature sheet that both parent and student need to sign and return to school.  Thank you! 


We have compiled a variety of information to share with you.  We hope it will be helpful in answering any questions or clarify policies and practices in our classrooms.  Any general questions can be directed towards your child’s homeroom teacher.  Any questions related to subject areas please direct them to the subject teacher.  We would encourage your child to speak to their teacher first if he/she has any concerns or questions that may arise.  If it is not resolved, we highly encourage you to contact your child’s homeroom teacher.

Parent & teacher communication is essential for a successful year! 


Student School Day 

Our day begins at 8:00 a.m.  Students will be picked up at door #4 by staff and will go directly to their homeroom.  Students may eat breakfast in the classroom.  Students are required to be in their desks by 8:00 a.m.  Attendance will be taken at this time.   

-Encourage your child to eat a good breakfast.  We are fortunate our school offers a free breakfast program.  Having your child participate by eating breakfast helps our school. 

-Please encourage your child to use good table manners as they would at home. 

Our school day ends at 2:40 p.m.  Your child will be dismissed directly from the classroom through door #4 as well.   



Please call the office or your child’s homeroom teacher’s extension if your child will be absent or need to arrive late or leave early.  When your child returns, please send a note as to why she/he was absent.  If you would like homework sent home, please let us know in advance if possible.  You will need to sign your child out in the office as well as sign him/her in when he/she returns to school.   

All excused absent work will need to be turned in within two school days. It is the student’s responsibility find out what missed work needs to be made up when he/she was absent from class.   



If your child needs to take any prescribed or over the counter medication at school, you will need to speak with the school office.  Students and teachers are not allowed to keep medication in their locker or desk.   

A continued change from last year…NO pain relievers such as Tylenol will be given from the school.  If your child requires it, you must provide it.  A note must be provided by you giving permission for your child to receive any over the counter medication.  All medication MUST be in its original packaging.   


Exterior Doors 

All school doors in the building will be locked during the day.  All other doors will be locked for security purposes.  Please check in and out of the office at door #2 when entering if you are visiting or volunteering.   


Parent Volunteers 

Parents are welcome and needed throughout the year.  Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering in the classroom/school.  A background check is mandated before volunteering.  Volunteers may be used in many ways, please let me know if you have an idea of how you would like to volunteer.  For example if you would like to share a unique hobby or your occupation, etc. any and all time would be appreciated.  


Break Time & Snack Time 

We encourage and allow students to use a water bottle throughout the day.  Please label your child’s water bottle.  Spill proof bottles are a must.  Students are also welcome to partake in a snack during the break time of our day.  Please make sure snacks are small and healthy.  A suggested snack list will be sent home upon request or you could find a copy of one at 

Note, snacks may be purchased after school and also for group snack times such as birthday treats.  Contact Steph Beyer at 218.643.6681 ext. 4286 for purchase information.  Students may bring a snack to share with the class on his/her birthday.  Due to Covid restrictions, ALL Birthday treats, must be individually wrapped.  Summer birthdays may bring treats on their half birthday or at the end of the school year.  Due to MN Dept. of Health of regulations, treats must be store bought/packaged. 


Lunch Information 

Lunch will be served daily before recess at 11:35 a.m.  Menus can be found on the school webpage.  Lunch money may be paid, in the office or paid online from the school web site.  If paying at school, please send money in a sealed envelope with your child’s name, grade, and the amount.  All accounts are payable in advance.  Breakfast is a free service available to all students. 


Library books may be checked out through the School Media center staff.   


Bus Students/Walkers/Picked up 

Please send a note or call if there is a change of plans.  If sending an email, and you do not receive a confirmation before 1:00, please call the office. 


Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices 

Students are not able to use cell phones or other personal devices during school hours. School staff will take away a device from a student if it is out during the school day.  The device will be returned to the student at the end of the school day. 


Classroom Management 

Students can be rewarded with play money which may be used to purchase coupons for items or privileges in the classroom “store.”  Students who also demonstrate positive behavior will be allowed to participate in our “Friday Free Time.”  Friday Free Time activities vary from week to week but are strictly a privilege to participate in.   



Knowing families are busy, we have a clear understanding of time and the lack of it! J We feel it is best to limit the amount of homework your child brings home.  Generally, if time is utilized during class, this will limit the amount of homework needed to be completed at home.  PLEASE use discretion on the amount of time spent on homework each night.  Thirty minutes is a reasonable amount of time for a third grader.  Please write a note if it takes longer than that or if schedules conflict with your child from completing his/her homework.  Keep in mind: Struggling is different than not wanting to do homework. 

  • Binders need to be checked EVERY night.  Your student’s take home binder will be taken home daily.  A Homework/Behavior Chart/POWER Reading Log is also part of your child’s binder.  All papers found on the left side pocket should be LEFT at home.  The right pocket of the binder holds papers which need to be brought RIGHT back such as homework and parent letters that need to be signed and returned for example may be found here.   

            A spelling pretest will be given on Mondays.  A spelling test will be given on Fridays.  Your student will bring               home the next weeks spelling list on Friday also, please look for it in your child’s binder.  The list will also be                 available to view, study, and practice on the Spelling City website.  Typically, in case of a short week, a test                 will not be given.  All spelling words will be included in the open house folder and can be found on our         
           classroom website along with the link to the web site Spelling City.  Spelling City is a free website and useful 
           for practicing the list.   

How to help your child succeed 

  • Set a time every day to check over your child’s binder.   Show an interest in your child’s schoolwork and homework.  This means checking your child’s binder every night and ensuring that all the homework is done and put back in the return to school side (right side) of their binder. 


  • Set aside a special time for your child to do homework.  Provide a quiet place and proper tools.   


  • Assist with homework when necessary.  Do not do your child’s homework. 


  • Avoid comparing one child with another.  We are all unique individuals with different learning styles and needs, and abilities. 


  • Build self-confidence and self-esteem in your child through praise and encouragement. 


  • Make only positive comments about your child’s school, program and teacher(s) in front of your child. 


  • Share the insights you have about your child with me and other teachers at parent/teacher conferences or by email.  This will help the teacher(s) and I better understand your youngster. 


  • Ask your child’s teachers and myself what skills need to be reinforced and how you can help.  


  • We are a team…working together, we will see success! J 


Learner Expectations 

This listing of learner expectations has been designed to explain 3rd grade’s educational program.  It shows examples of our expectations for students in each subject area upon completion of the third grade.  It does not list all the concepts, skills, and processes students are taught or all the concepts, skills and processes to which they are exposed.  It indicates some of the knowledge and skills a majority of students possess after they have successfully completed the third grade.  The rate of progress of each student will depend on individual differences, learning styles, and involvement from home. 

The concepts, skills, and processes are listed in separate subject areas in this syllabus.  However, they are taught in conjunction with each other to help students recognize the relationships among the various subjects. 

These learner expectations are always in a constant state of review by teachers and administrators and the state of Minnesota.  

Class Descriptions are as follows: 

Language Arts & Reading 

Third graders start to read increasingly more complex texts.  They comprehend meaning and develop a deeper understanding of text.  They read for extended periods of time and discuss what they have read from multiple genres.   

This course is designed to foster a love of reading and to enjoy becoming a life-long reader. We will also read outside of the textbook and read full novels and books. Units will be designed with different learning styles in mind and to incorporate technology.  Time will be spent teaching, “What is the big idea?”  “Why it is important to learn to read?” and “Why is it even more important to read to learn?”   



Come to school ready to read and have an open-mind for ALL genres. 

A POWER reading log will be a part of your student’s agenda page.  It must be filled out daily.  Third graders are expected to read for at least 20 minutes every night or 100 min.  weekly. 


 Course Objectives as set forth by the Common Core State Standards 


  1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. 

  1. Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas. 

  1. Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text. 

  1. Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. 

  1. Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text (e.g., a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and the whole. 

  1. Assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of a text. 

  1. Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse formats and media, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words. 

  1. Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence. 

  1. Analyze how two or more texts address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge or to compare the approaches the authors take. 

  1. Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.
