Assessment of English Learners

Approved Minnesota English Language Proficiency (ELP) Screener Assessments: the WIDA Screener and the Kindergarten MODEL. For students in kindergarten and 1st grade in the first semester, the Kindergarten MODEL is used to assess the student's current proficiency level in English. The WIDA Screener is used with potential English learners in grades 1-12 to make the final determination of English learner status. Additionally, to comply with federal accountability requirements, ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 is administered annually.

ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 stands for Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to State for English Language Learners. The ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 test assesses students' English language proficiency in five areas:

  • Social and Instructional Language
  • Language of Language Arts
  • Language of Mathematics
  • Language of Science
  • Language of Social Studies
ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 is given annually to monitor students' progress in acquiring academic English. ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 is aligned with the WIDA English Language Development Standards and assesses each of the four language domains of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Anticipated administration time for online ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 is the following: Listening - up to 40 minutes; Reading - up to 35 minutes; Speaking - up to 30 minutes; Writing - up to 65 minutes; and Kindergarten - up to 45 minutes. Additionally, test directions and student practice take about 10 minutes in each domain.

ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 testing window this year is from January 28 to March 22, 2019. Our anticipated testing schedule is the following: Gr. 1: 1/28 - 1/31; Gr. 2: 2/1 - 2/12; Gr. 3: 2/13 - 2/21; Grade 4: 2/22 - 2/27; Gr. 9: 2/28 - 3/6.

Test results become available at the beginning of the school year.
